    Considering how MUCH too early it is to discuss prospects for 2023 and HOW much can go wrong or turn out to be less ideal, when discussing HOW quickly the frost-hit land CAN or MAY recover, as well as how much of any area MAY produce a somewhat decent crop - albight since most regions/farms in MG are producing LESS arabica coffee in 2022 than in 2021 - perhaps a bit less bearing sentiment would be appropriate??

    • @CoffeeTradingAcademy
      @CoffeeTradingAcademy 2 года назад

      Hey Maja. Like you, I share my view as I see it. Others are free to point out where they disagree. My view changes over time. For example, lately I have been talking with my clients about my concerns with over recent dryness in Brazil. That has potential to make frost more likely, and potentially to negatively affect the flowering after the harvest. I think we share that concern. When I made this video, I had spent a week in Brazil talking to exporters, Coops, Brokers, traders and most importantly, agronomists. The agronomist I was traveling with in this video has been monitoring coffee crops in Minas for over 30 years and is part of a network of agronomists across Brazil. His view on the 23 crop is not an outlier, its shared by people with informed views of the crop. They all share a very optimistic view of the 23 crop, and have much more visibility into it then I do. On my little crop tour I was keeping an eye out for the 23 crop new growth, and it supported the view that the Brazil Crop would recover strongly. Can that change between now and a year from now? Absolutely. Heck, we have another cold front coming in Brazil that could change everything in an instant. But the market is forward looking and right now it appears to be pricing in a strong crop recovery a year hence. Hope that helps.

  • @majawallengren

    Thanks for sharing this video Ryan but for all decent sense of mutual respect how can you possibly say that "2022 crop looks great of these trees" when we are seeing only ONE SINGLE tree with some decent crop, and that new harvest/production is ONLY on the upper part of that tree, i.e. at a very MAX about 50% of potential, especially MORE so for an On-Year ?? If anything, your video here confirms what I have been saying all along; that the combined stress impact from both frost AND also drought has been MUCH more severe than what the market so far is acknowledging as the vast majority of the Brazil Arabica coffee park simply does NOT have any significant yields on trees for the new 2022 coffee crop in Brazil!! Furthermore, any suggestion that plant health and vegetative growth is SO good that we can expect a bumper/record crop in 2023 is WAY TOO PREMATURE, because not only do we need to get through the frost season - which already HAVE weakened trees again - but you neglect to mention that we also have to see that there won't be a repeat of the late rains and/or drought ahead and/or during the flowering - an issue that has become an increasingly common repeat-phenomenon in last 6-7 years across Brazil both Arabica and Robusta growing regions - before ANY real 2023 prediction can be made. Add to this that even if plant health for sure is MUCH better now than a year ago, these areas and trees are still NOT FULLY recovered from the frost and drought impact, and therefore still in a weakened state that will allow for ANY frost, or even just prolonged cold, to cause much more significant impact - just as we already HAVE SEEN happening in a significant part of the araica coffee regions from May 19-23 that just passed. If plant health had been fully recovered this cold would NOT have caused frost damage but it did, and anyone who don't believe what I am saying can check with any coffee agronomist in Brazil who WILL confirm what I say is in fact how coffee agronomy and plant physiology works for coffee. AND as for 2023 prospects, what we DO know already now is that of the 250K hectares that suffered varying degrees of frost damage, a significant part of that land will NOT yet have recovered for 2023 and the area that has recovered with SOME pruning like esceleto or recepa will ONLY be back with 30-40% productivity at a very maximum by 2023 and won't fully recover until 2025 and 2026. Finally, a good part of not only frost-hit coffee but also coffee land that was not even hit with frost has been taken out of coffee entirely and growers has switched this land to grains crops with no plans for returning it to coffee in the next 4-5 years at least. SO when discussing HOW quickly the frost-hit land CAN or MAY recover, as well as how much of any area MAY produce a somewhat decent crop - albight in most regions producing LESS in 2022 than last year - perhaps a bit less bearing sentiment would be appropriate??

    Thanks Ryan. The futures market sounds a good ideal theory for farmers to hedge their price but our poor force in emerging markets would not be able to approach these instruments both by knowledge and their financial condition. How a farmer with 2-3 ha of cultivation can handle all these stuffs ?

    • @CoffeeTradingAcademy
      @CoffeeTradingAcademy 3 года назад

      Thanks Hoang! It is very tough to hedge directly for a small farmer. Your best options would probably be to either participate in a farmer's coop, or if none are available, you could inquire with the local buying agents if they have any different options for pricing coffee. Many of them offer different types of marketing programs. Good luck!
